Representing Parkour in a Positive Light
In September, a few well known members of our community and I were given tickets for trespassing on the
roof of a school in Boulder. In retrospect, this was not a very good idea. My
deepest apologies go to the school, the Boulder community and our local parkour community for scaring them
and tarnishing our name respectively. Regardless of its appropriateness of scale and proportion,
we forgot to think about two very important things. First of all, we did not ask to be up there.
Free country and all, regardless of how we may feel about having a right to be up there, the truth
is we live in America and that stuff doesn't fly here yet. Secondly, we neglected to take into
account that there were people watching who did not know what we were doing. In considering children,
that can be a good thing. However, it can also be bad if misinterpreted and results in injury.
In our case someone was watching that obviously got scared enough to call the cops. Lets face it,
we may be ninjas or whatever in our own way but whichever way you slice it, radio waves travel the
speed of light. And cops tackle, taze, arrest and pepper spray people who run from them. They always
win because they are good guys just like we are supposed to be. Even aside from that, the image of
our sport is important. It is new and unknown. We have a chance to raise awareness and spread the
word about the good things our sport is all about. With that it is really everyone's responsibility
to do as such. Before us lies the future, the undiscovered country. In this country, those of us
who do parkour are on the frontier, the edge of the unknown. We feel our way blindly into the
future with only our morals and good sense to guide us along. When you go forward I implore you
to put your best foot forward and display those values, logic and morals that all people can
relate to instead of unfamiliarity and fear. May we raise tolerance, understanding and acceptance
of our sport. May we change the laws where we live and get the parks we deserve. May no one ever be charged a crime for working out and being fit. Lastly, may we
train and be ready from now until forever for that act of heroism that may be called upon to
save the life of another.
All thoughts that lead to acts change the world. Please think responsibly.
Ask before you climb, look before you leap, and don't break the law!
